Choose Unix/Oracle over Microsoft PDF Print
  • Unix provides faster and better response times than a Microsoft platform
  • An Oracle Database is faster and more reliable than a Microsoft database
  • Unix and Oracle combined offer more reliability (more robust) and faster response times than the Microsoft options – the system will not crash
  • Unix and Oracle is more scalable – offering a final solution when bet turnover and amount of users becomes larger
  • All the larger websites (banks, retail, auction sites, etc.) use Unix and Oracle because it is more secure, more robust and has faster response times
  • Unix and Oracle shows we are serious about our future growth
  • Unix has never been effected by a virus – no Unix viruses
  • Oracle is world recognized as the best possible database for internet projects
  • Combined with 2 x Intrusion Detection systems (same as used by major banks) and a firewall, SecureOdds offers the best possible security for operator and user alike
  • Once the investment in Unix is made (which it has in SO’s case), the upgrade path is not as intensive as Microsoft
  • A Microsoft platform will need to be upgraded to a Unix platform once the bet turnover becomes too high
  • Small operations use Microsoft, while medium to large operations use Unix and Oracle together
  • Unix wins hands down on scalability i.e. the ability to move to more powerful hardware as computing requirements increase
  • Unix has been around a lot longer than Microsoft, so it is by definition more mature
  • Unix is more flexible
  • With Microsoft, there is a constant need to patch security holes – this is not the case with Unix - for example, currently has 154 files available for download at Microsoft.com, nearly half of which are security updates
  • Locked into a Microsoft-dominated architecture feeds insecure, bloated code. Another failing is the needless codependencies of Microsoft products
  • Oracle is a proven leader in databases. It has been for a long time. It could be considered expensive, but you are buying years of experience at building a database management system
  • Microsoft Database (MySQL) has maybe about 10% of the features of Oracle
  • Oracle is better for BIG databases.  The response is instantaneous compared to MySQL
  • MySQL does not support Views, Stored Procedures, Triggers.  No User Defined Data Types.  Oracle does.  Oracle also supports uncorrelated and correlated subqueries up to 255 levels.  Oracle supports updatable views for users.  It can be made so each user has a unique view of the website in accordance with their betting history or preferences
  • Oracle has approx 40% of the market share in databases
  • If you want time-proven stability, maximum flexibility and power, and excellent support and recovery options then Oracle is the best.  If your data is important there's no excuse to use MySQL
  • MySQL uses much more computer power, thus slowing down response and load times
  • All the major Internet betting sites use Unix and Oracle combined
  • Oracle can import just about any data and databse, MySQL can not
  • MySQL is a powerful database platform for simple web-based applications.  MySQL is actually a database without proper transactions. What this means in terms of speed is dramatic. Eg. MySQL implements a table as one file, filesize limits as well as internal data organization, and indexing can become major limitations as tables grow to the millions of rows and higher.  One database is needed in order to relate the data
  • If the MySQL database crashes, the information lost in the crash is not retrievable – i.e. the most recent bets are not retrievable.  Oracle will enable you to roll back and retrieve those bets – therefore making sure you don’t lose transation data
  • Oracles support for tables and indexes are virtually a limitless size, provides full transaction support, and even sophisticated features such as Advanced Replication of databases realtime - MySQL does not have automatic or point in time recovery, a real limitation on heavy use production databases.
  • MySQL is a database fit for some types of applications. These tend to be smaller applications, or those which integrate applications with less sophisticated needs than those running Oracle on the backend.
  • MySQL does not have hotbackups which have been an integral part of Oracle for years
  • Oracle allows parallel queries while MySQL does not, and the ability to take one portion of a table offline without impacting queries on the rest of the table while MySQL does not – the one table will not function à ie. Oracle has inbuilt redundancy, MySQL does not
  • Oracle provides the full set of statistics, including histograms, and makes great use of it inside the Cost Based Optimizer. These statistics allow Oracle to better determine the best method of getting the data for your query and putting it together for you with the least use of resources in tems of memory cache, and disk access. This is key for a database. When running large multi-user applications all of which are vying for data in different tables, you want to load just the data you need, and nothing more.   Basically, Oracle avoids full table scans while MySQL can not
Other advantages of SecureOdds with regards to Platform
  • Future development and improvements to stay ahead of the competition is not limited
  • The website is designed to have static web pages (not dynamic pages), indexing, and automatic metatags in order to improve search engine responses
  • The content on SecureOdds (such as news) provides a better betting experience and more related content for the search engines to find
  • Compared to the Microsoft based betting sites that are currently out there, SecureOdds provides more flexibility and specific user related information (eg. Results, multi-currency, bet ids, statements, user administration, operator information and statistics, etc.
  • SecureOdds runs on multiple/many separate Oracle databases, and will continue to do so as we add further improvements after operational such as weather, web radio, content related help areas, etc. – this is clumsy and almost impossible on MySQL as it is almost impossible to relate the information from separate databases
  • It can be argued that Unix/Oracle platforms also perform inherently better in the web world when looking at search engine optimization due to the fact that the information provided on the site by the database is more easily indexed by the search engines
  • SecureOdds would not need to add to the platform until (at least) 10,000+ customers
